5 Meta Ads Mistakes That Burn Your Budget Every Month

Indian businesses waste crores on poorly configured Facebook and Instagram ads. Here are the most common mistakes and how to avoid them.

Running Facebook and Instagram ads isn't hard. Running them PROFITABLY is. Most businesses set up a campaign, boost a post, and pray. Here are 5 mistakes that silently drain your budget:

Mistake 1: Boosting posts instead of creating proper campaigns

The "Boost Post" button is Meta's trap for lazy advertisers. It gives you minimal targeting options and optimizes for engagement (likes, comments), not conversions. A proper campaign through Ads Manager lets you: - Choose specific objectives (purchases, leads, traffic) - Create custom audiences - A/B test creatives - Set proper conversion tracking

Mistake 2: Not tracking conversions on your website

You send people to your website. Great. But do you KNOW if they bought something? Signed up? Most businesses track "link clicks" and call it success. But clicks ≠ customers.

Install the Meta Pixel AND proper website analytics. Know the full journey: ad impression → click → landing page → browsing → purchase (or drop-off).

Mistake 3: Targeting too broad (or too narrow)

"All India, 18-65, interested in everything" — that's too broad. You're competing with every advertiser for the same eyeballs.

"Only women, 25-26, in Koramangala, who like organic matcha" — that's too narrow. Your audience is 200 people.

Find the middle ground. Start with your existing customer profile and build lookalike audiences from there.

Mistake 4: Never changing your creatives

Ad fatigue is real. If the same audience sees the same ad more than 3-4 times, they start ignoring it (or worse, hiding it). Rotate creatives every 7-10 days. Test different: - Images vs. videos - Short copy vs. long - Different hooks in the first line - Different CTAs

Mistake 5: Not looking at the RIGHT metrics

Impressions, reach, clicks — these are vanity metrics. What matters: - Cost per conversion (not cost per click) - Return on ad spend (ROAS) - Landing page view rate (did the page actually load after the click?) - Frequency (how many times each person sees your ad)

The fix

Use a proper dashboard that shows you both your ad performance AND your website data in one place. That's the only way to connect "I spent ₹10,000 on this ad" to "I made ₹45,000 from visitors who came through it."
